About Leather Art Center

Years ago I studied graphic arts and advertising, and perhaps because of that I developed an appreciation for design and form that follows function. It's incredibly satisfying to get your hands dirty and make something that is not only beautiful but also useful. Sewing, pottery, and woodworking come to mind. Leather craft was appealing because it seemed approachable: a few tools, a table, and you're off!

It started a few years back when on a whim I signed up for a leather course. I've been playing with leather ever since and I'm excited to share with you what I've learned. Working with leather is an adventure -an addictive one I might add- and a great counter to our multi-tasking, tech heavy, crazy-busy daily life. If you've been curious about working with this gorgeous, luxurious, and endlessly versatile material, this is your chance. I hope you'll join us for a leather crafting session.

About Jack Holland

Jack is a Master Leather Artisan and a contributing teacher at Leather Art Center. He’s been at it longer than most! This is how the story goes: when Jack turned ten, his father decided that any kid worth their salt should have a job. After a failed attempt at delivering the Sunday paper to the neighborhood, Jack was dropped off at a saddle maker’s shop in San Francisco. Needless to say, a life-long passion ensued.

Jack Holland can make just about anything out of leather, but today his interest lies in the art of making leather boxes. He typically spends a few weeks on each project, working in his Sausalito studio to create one-of-a-kind pieces entirely by hand. His impeccable eye for design and touch of whimsy contribute to the uniqueness and beauty of each of his leather boxes. Below are a few of Jack’s recent projects. You can see why he has earned a cult following over the years.

Leather box making entirely made by hand without a wooden frame is truly a disappearing art, so I am thrilled that Jack Holland has agreed to teach a series of classes. While we don’t have a date on the calendar right now, you can follow Jack on Instagram or enquire about private training with him.
